If you're planning a rafting trip on the Ganga, timing matters almost as much as which stretch you choose. Water level, current strength, and air/water temperature all shift through the year, and each combination makes for a genuinely different trip, from big, fast, cold-water thrills in autumn to a gentler, warmer float in spring. Here's what to actually expect month by month, plus how it changes which package makes sense for you.
September to November: Post-Monsoon Peak
Right after the monsoon retreats, the Ganga is running full and fast. This is the highest sustained water level of the year outside the monsoon itself. Rapids that are moderate in winter, like Roller Coaster and Golf Course on the Shivpuri stretch, pick up real size and push, and the river has a strong, continuous current between them. Water temperature is still relatively mild this early in the season (roughly 18 to 20°C in September, cooling into the teens by November), and air temperature is comfortable, in the low-to-mid 20s°C. This is peak season for experienced rafters and thrill-seekers who want the biggest water of the year, and it's also when our Kaudiyala to Nim Beach route is at its most demanding. Base points are busiest in this window, so if you want a specific date and time slot, especially for a group, book a few days ahead.
December to February: Winter Rafting
Water levels drop substantially and the river calms down, but rafting continues year-round in Rishikesh. Winter is simply a different kind of trip, not a closed season. Rapids are gentler and more forgiving, which actually makes December to February a good window for first-timers who still want a bit more current than the spring lull. The catch is temperature: water hovers around 10 to 14°C and mornings can dip close to freezing in the hills, so warm layers under your life jacket are worth packing, and we recommend afternoon slots over early-morning ones if you're cold-sensitive. This is a quieter season with smaller crowds at the base points, easier last-minute bookings, and a genuinely different, crisp-air river experience than the monsoon-fed autumn rush.
March to May: Spring Season
As temperatures rise, this is one of the most comfortable windows to raft, with pleasant weather in the mid-20s to low-30s°C, moderate water levels partway between winter's calm and autumn's power, and a good balance of real rapids and long, calm floating stretches where you can relax and take in the Himalayan foothill views. Water temperature climbs back into the high teens by May. It's a popular choice for families and first-timers for exactly this reason: Brahmpuri to Nim Beach and Club House to Nim Beach are both particularly well-suited to this stretch of the year. Late May starts to get warm enough that an early-morning slot is more comfortable than a midday one.
June to Mid-July: Monsoon Closure
Rafting operations pause during the peak monsoon (roughly mid-June through July) when the Ganga's water level and current become unsafe for commercial rafting. This isn't a business decision, it's a hard safety limit enforced river-wide. Exact dates shift year to year based on rainfall and official river safety guidance from the district administration, so always check with us directly before planning a monsoon-season trip; we'll tell you plainly if the dates you're asking about fall inside the closure window rather than take a booking we can't honor.
Our Recommendation
If you want the biggest rapids and don't mind cooler water, aim for September through November. If you want a calmer, warmer, more relaxed introduction to rafting, March through May is usually the sweet spot. If you're visiting in winter, December through February still delivers a real rafting trip, just pack warm and expect gentler water. Whichever stretch and season you pick, browse our rafting packages or get in touch and we'll help you match the right route to your travel dates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is rafting available every day of the year except the monsoon closure? Yes. Outside the roughly mid-June to end-July monsoon window, we run trips daily, weather and river conditions permitting. Individual days can still be postponed for heavy rain or unsafe flow, which we'll always confirm with you in advance.
Which season has the biggest rapids? September through November, right after the monsoon retreats, when the river is running at its highest sustained post-monsoon volume and current strength.
What if I can only travel during the monsoon closure? Get in touch via WhatsApp with your travel dates, and we'll confirm whether they fall inside the closure and, if so, suggest the closest safe dates before or after, or point you to what else is worth doing in Rishikesh during that window.
